TIPS TO BUY SMARTLY
Single Way VS Double Way
Although guitar truss rods are to protect necks, there are some different features between double way and single way types. For double way type, it provides more flexibility in adjustment, but single way can adjust along only one single way. This is firmly related with neck design.
Single action is the most common and traditional one, but dual action models seem to be more and more popular.
Length Is Critical
Let’s move on. Don’t forget length. Length is also a key factor when choosing a right model. So, how long will work? Normally, 18” for guitars and 24” for basses are the standard measures. But we need to keep in mind that the rod must extend from at least the middle of the first fret at the headstock end to at least into the area of the heel. And scale length is another factor we need to consider. So, if there’s an odd scale length in your design, then standard length of the rod might not work.
Thus, when buying truss rods, it is better to put your design, types of the rods and length together in your consideration.
Guitar Or Bass, Electric VS Acoustic
Actually, since the scale length is different between electric and acoustic guitar, and between guitar and bass, it is reasonable to use proper truss rod with proper length.
This is the basic principle.
However, it is possible to mix use them as long as the length of guitar truss rods fit for the length of the scale.
